PERIODONTOLOGY
Periodontology is a science that examines the tissues surrounding the gums and teeth.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an inflammatory disease of the tissues surrounding and supporting the tooth. Gum disease can be seen in all individuals, including children. It is more common in adults. If left untreated in the early period, it may cause gingival recession, shaking of the teeth and tooth loss. Gingivitis begins with gingivitis. At this stage, the gums are bleeding, swollen and red. This period is usually painless. If left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis. Periodontitis is the progression of gingivitis causing damage to the gingival and surrounding alveolar bone. At this stage, a periodontal pocket is formed between the tooth and gums. Periodontal pocket facilitates the progression of infection. As the disease progresses, the teeth begin to sway. If left untreated, teeth may go into extraction.

After this procedure, the patient will adapt to the gums with the correct oral care and the gingival pocket will be eliminated. Surgical treatment may be required in advanced cases.
The personal care of the patient is important in the prevention of periodic disease. For healthy gums, dental plaque must be removed from the tooth surface by daily brushing and flossing.
